About YTC

Mission

Yendor Theatre Company (YTC) is a creative, educational and transformative haven for emerging and established Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA+ artists. YTC is dedicated to developing original, boundary-pushing work that is rooted in the lived-experiences of both the artists and the historically-resilient communities where the art is being created; bridging divides between communities and modeling what it means to center equity and justice in both its processes and artistic products

Vision

Yendor Theatre Company envisions a world where:

Artists are supported and recognized for driving transformational change in historically resilient communities

Artists have access to sustainable, ample, and reliable financial support

Artists are embraced as a vital force for advancing racial and social justice

Artists are liberated from oppressive confines and free to create authentic, life-changing art for the benefit of artists and their communities

Founder

THE VISIONARY…

Building on his tremendous work within the visual arts world, Rodney Gilbert created YTC in 2016, to bridge his passion for theatre arts and his love for his community in the City of Newark. Serving as the inaugural Artistic Director, Rodney created an ensemble of young artists to engage the local community in theatre arts. “

Gilbert, a graduate of University of the Arts, served the arts community as an educator and administrator for various institutions and organizations. Rodney brought his artistic talents to a variety of institutions including NJPAC, New Community Corp, Arts Horizon, Passage Theatre, to name a few. He was a longtime professor at Drew University. He directed world premiere productions of Chisa Hutchinson’s New World Disorder & Surely Goodness and Mercy, Pia Wilson’s Down Neck and Aaliyah Habeeb’s Love Ya Like a Sis.”
