Free professional theatre productions in Newark communities
Launched in 2019, YTC’s Neighborhood Theatre Initiative stages free, professional theatre directly in public, outdoor spaces throughout the City of Newark.
Since 2022, YTC has commissioned Paris Crayton III, Tylie Shider, and Newark’s own Pia Wilson to create new plays specifically for this initiative.
Our plays have been produced at the Newark Riverfront, Lincoln Park, Mildred Helms Park, the Courtyard at the Newark Public Library, El Patio on Broadway, and the City of Newark’s / Urban League’s Courtyard.

Ahmad, a striving documentarian, wants to make a film about the Newark Riots and hopes to enlist the help of his mother and his Aunt Delores, a cantankerous yet jovial long time resident of the Central Ward. In his efforts to find a coherent story, he unleashes old family rivalries that force him to question his vision and purpose.
